The 1200mm length is chosen around sheet goods. A sheet of ply or gyprock is the thing you are constantly marking out, and this rule covers it in one go. It also puts your floor screw spacings at 300mm, 600mm, 900mm and 1200mm straight on the rule, so you are stepping off marks instead of running a tape and doing the sums every sheet.

The 45mm width matches common 90mm x 45mm framing timber, so it doubles as a gauge. For anything off square there is an angle finder covering 0 to 180 degrees, and the increments are marked at 0.5mm where you need real accuracy. A reinforced brass hinge and pins carry the folding, the ABS body handles a drop, and the bevelled edges let you mark tight against it.
