An aluminium shank keeps the weight down when you are pointing all day.

Weight in a pointing trowel is felt in your wrist by mid afternoon, not in the first hour. Putting the shank in aluminium takes it out of the part of the tool that does not need the mass, so you keep the blade doing the work without carrying extra steel through every stroke.

It is fixed with stainless steel rivets, which is a deliberate choice: the shank to handle joint is where a trowel loosens up and where plain steel rivets rust and start weeping. The blade is trade grade carbon steel, and the handle is one piece ergonomic plastic, so there is nothing to work loose or absorb water.
