A carpenters pencil with a medium lead, for a line you can still read tomorrow.

Medium is the grade that suits most of what you mark. Too soft and the line smears and blunts every second mark, too hard and it scores the timber without leaving anything you can see. Medium gives you a dark, clean line on timber and plastics that survives handling, rain on the frame and a bit of sawdust over the top.

The shape matters more than people give it credit for. The traditional chamfered rectangle sits flat in your hand and against a square, it does not roll off the top plate when you put it down, and the flat lead lets you mark a fine line for a cut or turn it and lay down a broad mark you can see from across the frame.
