The slide lock is the part that matters on a snap off knife. It holds the blade out at the length you set it rather than letting it creep back into the handle when you lean on it, which is what turns a straight cut into a torn one. The 18mm blade gives you the depth for plasterboard, insulation and carpet, and you snap a segment off for a fresh tip instead of changing blades.
