A hickory handle flexes under the swing, which is why it is still the handle of choice for swinging a sledge all day.

Hickory gives you feedback. You feel where the head is through the swing, and the timber takes some of the shock out of a miss instead of sending all of it back up your arms. On a long demolition session that control is the difference between accurate hits and swinging wild by the third hour.

The head is drop forged and hardened, so it holds its face through repeated contact with brick, concrete and steel. It is fitted with steel wedges to keep the head tight on the handle, and if you ever do need to rehang it, a timber handle is a job you can do yourself.
