A 624g scutch hammer on a hickory handle, for cleaning up brickwork without wrecking it.

Hickory is still the handle timber of choice for striking tools because it flexes and soaks up the shock instead of sending it all back up your arm. On a scutch, where you are tapping away at mortar and brick faces for long stretches, that is the difference between a comfortable afternoon and a sore elbow.

The head is drop forged steel and fitted with steel wedges, so it stays seated on the handle through repeated work rather than loosening off and needing a rewedge. At 624g it is heavy enough to do the work and light enough to keep control of on a delicate face.
