The adjustment button works while the grips are still on the work piece. Under a vanity or in a wall cavity that is worth real time, because the alternative is pulling the tool out, resetting it by eye, and feeding it back in blind.

The jaws are smooth and parallel. Smooth means you can tighten a chrome or plated fitting without leaving teeth marks the customer will point at, and parallel means the grip load is spread across the flat rather than biting two points, so you get more turn before it slips. They are forged from chrome vanadium electric steel and oil hardened, which is what keeps the jaw faces flat instead of rounding off.
