The sliding stock locks anywhere along the rule, so a combination square is really a depth gauge you can set and leave set. Mark a rebate depth or a hinge mortice once, lock it off, and every mark after that is identical. That is where the time goes on repetition work, not on the first mark.

The rule is stainless steel with the metric graduations engraved into it rather than printed on, so the numbers are still there after a year in the nail bag. The cast and machined sliding stock holds the 90 degree and 45 degree faces true, which is what stops a square drifting out and quietly ruining your marking.
