What White Ivory actually looks like

White Ivory is a 20mm decorative stone. It is mostly white, with grey and black pieces through it, so it reads as bright without looking like a sheet of paint. The mix is the point. A pure white rock shows every leaf and every muddy footprint. The grey and black in White Ivory hide the small stuff, so the bed keeps looking tidy between clean ups.

It changes with the weather. Dry, it is a soft off white. After rain it goes brighter and the darker pieces stand out, which is when most people fall for it. If you can, come and see it at the North Maclean yard after a shower. That is the rock at its best, and it is our most popular decorative stone for a reason.

Where it works in a garden

White Ivory earns its keep where you want light. Against a dark fence, under a hedge that throws shade, or around a dark green plant like a lilly pilly, the white lifts the whole bed. It suits modern homes with rendered walls and it suits older brick homes just as well, because the grey and black in it pick up the mortar lines.

It also works as a dry creek line through a lawn, in the strip down the side of the house where nothing grows, and around a pot or a water feature as a feature ring. Keep it out of heavy foot traffic. A 20mm stone moves under boots, so for a path you want a compacted base and a step, not loose rock.

How to lay it so it stays clean
1
Clean bedPull every weed, rake the soil level and firm it with your boots.
2
Weed matLay it over the lot, pin it, overlap the joins. It keeps the soil off the white.
3
Hold the edgeSteel or block edging keeps a crisp line and stops the mower throwing stone.
4
Rake, then hoseSpread with a rake so the mat stays whole. Hose it off and step back.

Keeping it white

White rock stays white if you give it a hose every few weeks and pull leaves out before they rot in. A leaf blower on low does most of the work. If a bed has been down for years and gone dull, a stiff broom and a hose bring most of it back, and a top up of fresh stone over the top does the rest. You do not need to dig the old rock out. Spread the new over it and the bed is bright again for the price of a thin layer, not a full bed.

Questions people ask
Is White Ivory a pebble or a crushed stone?

It is a crushed stone, so the pieces have edges and lock together a little rather than rolling around like a round pebble. That is why it sits better on a slope and holds a line against an edge.

Does white stone get dirty quickly?

Any white rock shows dirt more than a brown one. White Ivory has grey and black through it, which hides leaf litter and dust better than a plain white rock, and a hose brings it back. Weed mat under it stops the soil coming up and staining it from below.

Can I use White Ivory on a path or driveway?

Around pots, in beds and as a feature strip it is ideal. On a path or a driveway a 20mm loose stone moves under boots and tyres, so you want a compacted base and a bigger, angular rock built for traffic. Ask us and we will point you at the right one.

Can I come and see it before I order?

Yes. The pile is at the North Maclean yard and you can grab a handful and see it wet and dry. We are open Mon to Fri 7am to 5pm, Sat 8am to 4pm and Sun 9am to 4pm. Or order online at rockmate.com.au and we deliver across South East Queensland.
