How Many Bags of Cement for a Cubic Metre of Concrete Blend?
For a general purpose mix, allow 14 bags of GP cement for every cubic metre of 10mm concrete blend. Here is why, and when to change it.

The number
Concrete blend is the sand and the aggregate already mixed in the right proportion. You add the cement and the water. For a general purpose mix you typically need 13 to 14 bags of cement per cubic metre of blend, and for the 10mm blend we recommend, allow 14 bags of GP cement per cube. Order the cube and the 14 bags together and it all comes on one truck.

More cement gives you higher strength. Go up for structural work and anything carrying heavy loads. Less cement is fine where strength does not matter much, like a non-load-bearing path or a garden feature. If you are not sure, stick with the 14. It is the mix that suits most backyard slabs, paths and footings for sheds and pergolas.

Why 10mm blend
The aggregate size changes how the concrete behaves. 20mm aggregate gives superior strength and suits heavy-duty structural work, but it is harder to work and finish. 5mm aggregate is easy to work but weaker, so it is for decorative and light-use jobs. 10mm sits in the middle: good strength, good workability, and it finishes clean. That is why it is the blend we recommend for most jobs and the one we keep in the yard.

Mixing it so it lasts
Mix it evenly so the strength is the same right through. Keep the water down: too much water is the most common way a slab ends up weak and dusty. Add it slowly until the mix just holds together. Once it is placed, cover it while it cures to hold the moisture in, and keep it out of direct sun and rain for the first days. A slab that cures slowly is a slab that lasts.
